Abhijeet's homophobic tweets on Karan Johar, Fawad Khan detract from debate on Pakistani artiste ban

After he was arrested by the Mumbai Police in July for his offensive tweets against a woman journalist, and later released on bail, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya is back in the news for his strident statements on the micro-blogging platform. And this time, the target of his Twitter ire is filmmaker Karan Johar. [caption id=“attachment_2870690” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![ABHIJEET_AFP](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/ABHIJEET_AFP.jpg) Abhijeet Bhattacharya. AFP/File photo[/caption] Abhijeet seemed to have jumped onto the anti-Johar bandwagon — the filmmaker has been targeted by political groups like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which demanded that he oust Pakistani actor Fawad Khan from his upcoming film Ae Dil hai Mushkil. Abhijeet has been tweeting against Johar and filmmaker Mahesh Batt for “bredding and feeding” artistes from acros the border ever since the move to ban Pakistani actors gained momentum here in the wake of the Uri attacks. Karan Johar had also spoken out against the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association’s decision to ban all Pakistani artistes and technicians from working in India. In the meantime, there have also been reports that Fawad would be the first guest of the new season of the filmmaker’s popular talk show Koffee With Karan.  While Johar clarified who his first guests will actually be ; this didn’t stop Abhijeet from commenting on the director and his star.  Abhijeet tweeted:

He doesn’t seem to be bothered about the criticism his tweets generated, because he re-tweeted the Times of India story about his comments:

While the debate to ban Pakistani actors or not has serious implications, such homophobic rants are hardly likely to raise the quality of the discourse or add to it in any meaningful way. Even as we ponder whether or not cultural exchanges should be stalled in the aftermath of a serious terrorist attack, such an undignified attack cannot be taken recourse to. That at least seemed to be the sentiment among Twitterati, who said:

Singer Abhijit calls actor Fawad Khan Mrs Karan Johar. Nothing wrong being a missus. Nothing wrong being gay. What's the joke, again?

The saddest bit about @abhijeetsinger's tweets isn't their casual #homophobia or #xenophobia, but their downright, crass stupidity. pic.twitter.com/NqcheEi6lZ
