Initially, S Shankar's science fiction entertainer 2.0 was scheduled to release on this Diwali. However, since the film is VFX heavy, the makers needed more time to ensure international quality. Thus, the release date was pushed from Diwali 2017 to Republic Day 2018, averting a clash with Rohit Shetty's comedy ensemble Golmaal Returns and Advait Chandan's coming-of-age musical Secret Superstar.

However, now the makers have revealed that fans of Rajinikanth who were eagerly awaiting Diwali do have something to look forward to on the festival. Bollywood Life reports that the first teaser of the film will be unveiled on Diwali on 19 October.

As far as the full trailer is concerned, the makers have something special planned for that as well. DNA reports that a grand trailer launch will be held in Chennai on 12 December as a part of the celebration of Rajinikanth's 67th birthday.

2.0 is the sequel to Shankar's 2010 blockbuster Robot or Enthiran. Rajinikanth will reprise his double roles of scientist Vaseegaran and the robot Chitti. He will be seen locking horns with Hindi film superstar Akshay Kumar who will hold evil powers in a negative role.

The film also stars Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey, Adil Hussain and Riyaz Khan. It is produced by Subaskaran Allirajah's Lyca Productions and is slated to release on 26 January, 2018 along with Neeraj Pandey's Hindi espionage thriller Aiyaary.
