This is an interesting reveal. Close to 70 percent of all the candidates fielded by the Congress Party and up to 50 percent of the candidates of the Bharatiya Janta Party are Indian rupee millionaires (crorepatis), according to a
preliminary analysis
by the Association for Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch. Out of 188 candidates, 114 candidates, or 62% of candidates, have declared total assets of more than Rs 1 crore. Breaking that down, we find that 86 out of 126 candidates of the Congress Party, and 30 out of 62 candidates of the BJP have declared total assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. Until March 8, a total of 203 candidates were announced by the Congress and BJP for the Lok Sabha elections. Out of these, the Association for Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch analysed the background details of 188 candidates whose affidavits were available from assembly or Lok Sabha/Rajya Sabha elections in the past.
