New Delhi: Delhiites would be able to bid for fancy and VIP numbers for their cars with Delhi cabinet today clearing a proposal to auction such numbers at high prices to generate additional revenue. The auction will be held every fortnight and the amount collected would be transferred to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for enhancing the sphere of grant during natural calamities and for needy persons facing hardships. Reuters[/caption] After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the intention of the government was not only to generate huge amount by way of allotment of fancy numbers by auction but to utilise the amount for welfare purposes. To facilitate the new system of registration of vehicles, a new rule namely Rule 34 A in the Delhi Motor Vehicles Rule 1993 will be incorporated for allotment of different categories of registration mark for non-transport four-wheeled vehicles. Dignataries and VIPs would be eligible for registration and allotment of fancy numbers for their vehicles upto maximum two numbers without payment of additional fee. PTI
