American chipmaker Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on Thursday, in conversation with Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his pro-technology approach in governance.

Speaking at the Nvidia AI Summit — a three-day event from October 23 to 25 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai — Huang said, “When I met Modiji about six years ago, the first time he asked me to meet his Cabinet was to address them about artificial intelligence.”

He said, “I was so surprised. It was literally the first time any government leader, any national leader, had asked me to address his Cabinet on this particular topic.”

“It was long before anyone was talking about artificial intelligence,” said Huang, emphasising that the Indian prime minister was among those select world leader who viewed the Artificial Intelligence technology with an open mind to apply it in routine governance.

The ongoing event is focussing on how India is addressing the world’s most significant challenges using technological developments in the cyber sector. The Nvidia AI Summit is expected to particularly focus on how AI infrastructure can enhance sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and manufacturing.

This is not the first time that Hung has praised Modi or underscored the scope of technology in meeting India’s overall development goals. In September, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly meeting, Huang met him.

After meeting Modi, Huang had said, “This is India’s moment. You have to seize the opportunity."

Huang was one of 15 technology sector leaders who met Modi during his visit to the United States. Nvidia is said to be seeking to leverage India’s strong semiconductor design talent. India is also a rapidly expanding market for AI-based products.

The American chipmaker has also proposed a collaboration with India to co-develop an artificial intelligence (AI) chip, The Economic Times reported. Huang initiated the proposal during his meeting with PM Modi in the US.
