Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy’s statement on the need for 80-hour work week is still fresh in many people’s minds. It pops up regularly on social media platforms– in discourses, memes, and more.
But now, there is a new take from another Indian industry leader. This one from Larsen and Toubro Chairman and Managing Director, SN Subrahmanyan, is a call for an even longer work week!
You read that right. Subrahmanyan, in an internal L&T interaction, said that he’d like it if employees worked not only on Saturdays, but Sundays as well!
When asked why L&T is still making people work on Saturdays, Subrahmanyan said “I regret I’m not able to make you work on Sundays, to be honest. If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be more happier because I work on Sundays also.”
In terms of work hours, that would add up to a 90-hour work week!
The video was posted online by a user claiming to be a fresher at L&T. It quickly garnered a lot of attention on the platform.

Despite the outrage among the public, L&T has backed Subrahmanyan’s stand.
“At L&T, nation-building is at the core of our mandate. For over eight decades, we have been shaping India’s infrastructure, industries, and technological capabilities. We believe this is India’s decade, a time demanding collective dedication and effort to drive progress and realise our shared vision of becoming a developed nation. The chairman’s remarks reflect this larger ambition,” CNBC-TV18 cited a company spokesperson as saying.
