The shape of cars to come in 2013

Here’s a sneak peak at what’s in store for the Indian car market in 2013

Tata: There are indications that Tata Motors may launch a Nano variant with power steering, alloy wheels and some other minor changes in 2013. Diesel and CNG variants may also be launched by the end of the year. Industry experts say the diesel Nano could cost between Rs 2.2-3.2 lakh. The Nano has never lived up to its sales potential and even if the diesel and CNG are pushed to early 2014, adding power steering would certainly give it a much needed facelift. These little alterations like power steering may also be easy on the pocket since the car will cost only between Rs 20,000-25,000 more with them.

Maruti Suzuki India: Has already launched the Alto 800 in October so no major fresh launches expected next year. But it could look at refreshing the SX4 whose sales have been falling drastically. A refreshed version of the Ritz and A-Star may also be launched but a mini-SUV, which was showcased at the Auto Expo this year, may still be some time away. Some industry experts say the company will unveil a new small car in the under Rs 5 lakh bracket, which will also have a diesel version by 2014.

Ford: Compact SUV EcoSport, which should be less than 4 meters in length. It will compete directly with Mahindra Quanto and is widely expected to be priced between Rs 7-9 lakh. This car is expected to come with a one litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine and if it is priced right, could force other products in the category such as Renault Duster to be refreshed. EcoSport should ideally combine the fuel efficiency of a small car and the power of an SUV.

General Motors: The Enjoy multi purpose vehicle (MPV) should reach dealerships in the first quarter of 2013. This seven seater would compete Nissan Evalia and Mahindra Xylo and could come anywhere between Rs 6-9 lakh. A Chevy Beat facelift and the sedan version of the Sail hatchback could also be unveiled nest year.
