Tata Motors looks to secure Rs 600 cr business under JNNURM - II

Panaji: Tata Motors today said it is expecting business of Rs 600 crore for supplying buses under the Centre’s urban renewal programme JNNURM, the second phase of which is underway. “As far as the orders go for JNNURM, around 50 percent of the total orders are placed with Tata Motors. But the company has taken lead in supply of vehicles under this scheme. So if you take the supplies, it is around 65 percent of the total buses that are rolled out under this scheme,” VS Noronha, vice president, Tata Motors, told PTI. Noronha said government’s big vision is to make public transport a pleasant experience to commuters. “Many of the specifications of new JNNURM vehicles such as electronic tracking system, electronic displays, floor entry and wide exits are for the convenience of the commuters,” Noronha said. The company has to manufacture the buses with these features for the ease of public, he said. “All the on board electronics have been mandated and this will slowly catch on and public will have better experience while travelling in such JNNRUM buses,” Noronha said. “Under JNNURM - I, we supplied almost 6,000 units out of total 10,000. In JNNURM - II, we have order for 5,000 and we have supplied 2,500…,” he said. The company has already launched 650 buses in Himachal Pradesh, and several others in the civic bodies around Mumbai including Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He said a normal bus would be in the range of Rs 14-15 lakh but under JNNURM specifications, the average cost of a bus would Rs 19-23 lakh and for larger cities, it is Rs 45-60 lakh. PTI
