Dals avalilable at grocery stores are usually polished whichresult in a loss of nutritional qualities. Unpolished dal is also not processed with water, oil and marble powder.
It’s healthier and also cooks faster, thus saving fuel, which is why, iShakti unpolished dal sells at a premium of Rs 8-10 a kg over other dal varities. For instance, one kg of toor dal sells at Rs 98 and moong dal at Rs 105. The range is large and includes toor (red gram), chana (chickpea), moong (green gram), urad (black gram) and masoor (red lentil). There are also options in whole and split (with and without skin) dals and besan (chickpea flour).
Tata Chemicalsforayed into the 18-million-tonne (mt) pulses market under the umbrella brand of i-shakti in November 2010. And thepulses are even available at 25,000 outlets in the country, including the Tata Group’s hyper market chain Star Bazaar and Mumbai’s cooperative store chain Sahakari Bhandar.
