The Delhi chapter of The Indus Entrepreneur (TiE), a non-profit organization to foster entrepreneurship, is holding its annual flagship conference, TiEcon on Friday. This year’s theme for the two-day event is ‘Ab ki baar disruption’.
Navyug Mohnot, Co-Chair, TiE Delhi, says the industry witnessed a lot of disruption in the past couple of years, which is a continuous trend. “Disruption is almost central to the motivation of a startup,” Mohnot said in an interview with Firstbiz.
Edited excerpts.
Why has TiEcon chosen disruption as a theme this year?
When we were thinking about the theme, the one thing that emerged clearly was that a lot of disruptive technologies and development was happening over the last three-four years. Be it healthcare, entertainment, social mobility or cloud, we saw new and bubbling ideas coming that were changing everything. Even in the case of business models, we saw a lot of innovation and disruptions.
The bunch of startups that are reinforcing each other in creating disruptive businesses while making a market for themselves are making the incumbents to seriously think [about this strategy]. Through this TiE event we will see who is disrupting whom, and how are the incumbents dealing with these disruptors.
What are the upcoming disruptive sectors to be discussed at TiEcon?
In terms of sectors, education, healthcare, entertainment and retail are a few sectors which are already getting disrupted by young companies and ideas. Even manufacturing is getting disrupted which is a big pain point for product startups.

There are verticals like retail, entertainment, education; and horizontals such as technologies and business models which cut across all sectors. Internet is a horizontal. What we are trying to do is to talk a little about the sector and talk a lot more about the trend or technology, which are horizontals. We will be talking a lot about new technologies, tools and emerging business models.
How is the manufacturing sector getting disrupted?
The manufacturing industry will get disrupted because of a lot factors. In the next five years we will see a lot of 3D printing, a trend which will affect manufacturing massively. Thanks to social mobility and internet, we will be able to reach the micro market in a most cost-effective way. Also, the whole internet of things will hugely move the supply-chain. Manufacturing is going to undergo changes, though slowly and will take around 7-10 years.
How much did TiE earn from sponsorship this year?
TiE will have to give those figures and I am not sure if we can give you that. But we have till now 20 supporting partners and at least 15-20 sponsors. So it’s going strong in terms of support from our sponsors.
