Mumbai: The markets crashed today as Brent crude fell below the $53/bbl mark and political uncertainty in Greece spooked global markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex closed below the 27,000 mark as it fell 3 percent and the broader 50-issue NSE Nifty ended the day lower by 3 percent to close at 8,127.35.
Broader markets mirrored the benchmarks with the BSE Mid-cap index shedding 3 percent and the BSE Small-cap index plunging by 3 percent.
The major Nifty losers were JSPL -5.9 percent, ONGC -4.91 percent, Tata Steel -4.82 percent, PNB -4.64 percent and Sesa Sterlite -4.34 percent
The Nifty advance-decline ratio was 1:49 with only HUL gaining 2.14 percent.
All sectors were trading in the red with BSE Oil & Gas -4.17 percent, BSE Realty -3.66 percent and BSE Metal -3.49 percent falling the most.
The Bank Nifty ended the day lower 586.65 points or -3.08 percent.
