In a major relief to telecom players, the Supreme Court has extended the 2G spectrum auction deadline till 11 January 2013, after which contempt proceedings will be initiated against erring officials if the government fails to do complete the auction process within the fixed deadline.
“Exemplary costs may be imposed in the event of failure to complete auction process within the deadline,” the court said today.
The apex court has made it clear that no other court will hear any pleas to extend the deadline further, while existing existing 122 l icencees will be allowed to continue operations till 18 January.
Earlier the SC had set a deadline of 7 September for operation of existing licenses.
The court has allowed the government to begin the auction process on 12 November 2012, but warned that if the spectrum is not auctioned by 11 January, it will start a contempt trial against erring government officials.
