A host of options are available now, from the basic cab services, to midnight taxis, and cabs only for women. Uber still remains one of the more popular cab services for the convenience factor of not having to worry about cash or payment at the end of your ride.

But while you’re sitting in the cab pondering about life, have you ever wondered how much an Uber driver makes? If you compare them to the local taxi drivers, they seem vastly different. They’re more urbane, and equipped to dealing with the smart-phone-using youth of metro cities.

But let’s talk finances. In this Quora thread , a user posted an entire conversation he had with two Uber drivers from Delhi, about how much money they make. Hold your breath. Their average income is anything between Rs 35,000 to Rs. 52,000 a week.

One particular cab driver had a cooler filled with drinks, snacks and mouth fresheners available at MRP, and drives an SUV. He explained to the Quora user that he earns an extra Rs. 200 for every taxi fare, as gratuity for being a driver. If he works close to 10-12 hours everyday, which this cabbie does, he can earn anything above Rs. 50000 a week.

I am very content for the services and remuneration. I spend around Rs 40000-50000 on fuel a month, and maintenance is about 10000-15000. So I am making Rs 1.2 lakhs a month nowadays,” says the driver.

Another driver, who drives a Maruti Dzire, earns upto Rs. 35000 a week. The thread also goes on to break down the payment methods, the types of Uber and the company’s strategy of breaking even.

While interviewing the cab drivers, the Quora user said what was perhaps on all our minds: “[I’m> thinking in mind, god why am I doing [an> MBA.”
