Finally, now that the top three contenders - BJP’s Narendra Modi, Congress’ Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal-for the post of India’s next prime minister have declared their assets, Firstbiz decided to do a comparative check on their declared assets.
The results are, admittedly, not surprising.Rahul Gandhi, the general secretary of Congress Party and son of party president Sonia Gandhi, wins hands down when it comes to the wealth factor: with total declared assets worth Rs 9.6 crore, he’s on top of the pack, followed by Arvind Kejriwal with declared assets worth Rs 2.14 crore and Narendra Modi’s assets of just Rs 1.65 crore.
All those contesting elections are obligated to declare information about their total assets, educational qualifications, marital status and criminal cases.
Here is a comparison of the total declared assets of Gandhi,, Kejriwal and Modi:
What does come as a surprise is that the biggest chunk (74 percent) of Rahul Gandhi’s declared assets comes other assets, including personal loans worth over Rs 6 crore. Aam Aadmi’s Kejriwal, meanwhile, has the largest chunk of his total assets tied up in property. The AAP leader has declared two properties owned by him and his wife (the cost of her property is estimated at Rs 1 crore).
Another interesting fact that emerged from the declared assets is that Kejriwal has no investments in mutual funds or stocks. While most of his savings are in fixed deposits, his wife certainly has a penchant for gold. She has assets worth Rs 9.24 lakh in gold and silver, which accounts for 42 percent of their combined movable assets. The value of the gold is also more than twice the value of the Kejriwal’s fixed deposits.
Modi, meanwhile, has declared gold rings worth Rs 1.35 lakh. Rahul, on the other hand, seems to be taking the finance minister’s advice quite seriously: his gold holdings amount to a little less than Rs 3 lakh, while his financial investments are a whopping Rs 1.03 crore.
He has invested Rs 1.9 lakh in mutual funds/debentures/shares etc. He has invested Rs 81.2 lakh in mutual funds and about Rs 21 lakh in Postal and National Saving Schemes. The total value of his immovable property is Rs 8,07,58,265. On the liabilities side, he has also declared that he has taken Rs 9 lakh loan from his mother Sonia Gandhi, as well as another liability of Rs 9 lakh. His total liabilities add up to Rs 18 lakh.
Arvind Kejriwal and his wife have declared movable assets of Rs 4,25,085, while his wife has a total of Rs 17,41,583 while Modi has declared movable assets of Rs 61,065 lakh. Modi owns a residential house in Gandhinagar, worth around Rs 1 crore.
Our final observation is that none of the candidates own any vehicles or land.
Movable assets include cash in hand, bank balances, financial investments, gold and other valuables, vehicles, personal loans and advances and miscellaneous assets.Immovable assets include property and land.
