Microsoft to show off more Windows 10 features: What's in it for the enterprise?

Microsoft is all geared up to show off its new operating platform Windows 10 today. It would be interesting to see if the company has anything for the lucrative enterprise segment.

Last October, Microsoft said that Windows 10 -- which will replace the largely unpopular Windows 8 – is all set to be the “greatest enterprise platform ever.”

“With one universal app platform, one security model, and one deployment and management approach, Windows 10 will offer an improved experience for enterprise users,” said Microsoft when it pitched a technical preview of Windows 10 to businesses last year. "Windows 10 adapts to the devices customers are using, from Xbox to PCs and phones to tablets and tiny gadgets," said Terry Myerson, Microsoft's head of operating systems.

In advance of Microsoft's event, Forrester’s analyst Frank Gillett says, "Windows 10 will become the new enterprise standard, the successor to Windows 7, a status that Windows 8 was unable to attain. Windows 10 will enable Microsoft to retain its leading position in PC computing, especially in the enterprise, where the PC remains a critical work tool."

It may bring some cheer to Microsoft, but Gillett feels the company could face some challenges in the mobile space – a segment which Microsoft has been eyeing since the launch of Windows 8.

"Challenges for Windows 10 will come in the mobile arena," says Gillett. "While it will give developers the unprecedented ability to develop apps that work on PCs, tablets, and smartphones with a single application development effort - it does not show enough potential for a differentiated mobile experience that will draw developers and consumers alike away from iOS and Android."

No matter how much Microsoft projects its latest OS to be the next darling of enterprise users, only time will tell whether Windows 10 will ever be able to bring the kind of success Windows 7 brought to the company. And, will Windows 10 recapture the lucrative business market, which outrightly rejected the Windows 8.
