Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg became the third-richest person in the world after he surpassed Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos in the elite list. Zuckerberg’s rise came amid a strong week of trading for Meta shares, which are up more than 5 per cent this week. According to Forbes, the Facebook founder’s estimated net worth reached a whopping $205.4 billion after a $3.9 billion increase on Friday.
Zuckerberg managed to take over the Amazon founder whose current net worth stands at $203.9 billion. Interestingly, the Meta CEO is also not far behind the No. 2 on the real-time billionaire list, Larry Ellison, whose net worth stands at $203.9 billion. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is currently at the top of the list with $264 billion.
It is pertinent to note that the Meta CEO’s recent jump in net worth coincided with an over 2 per cent increase in Meta shares, which closed on Friday at $595.94 after beginning the week at $567.15.
Meta shares witness a boom in 2024
The 40-year-old billionaire launched Facebook in 2004 and has much of his wealth tied to Meta Platforms stock. Shares of Meta (META) have surged by more than 72 per cent in the year 2024. The tech firm operates multiple social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Threads, as well as instant messaging app WhatsApp.
While addressing the Meta Connect 2024 event on September 5, Zuckerberg said Meta AI is on track to become the most used assistant in the world. “We’re almost at 500 million monthly (active users), and we haven’t even launched in some of the bigger countries yet,” Zuckerberg said, referring to countries in the European Union.
