Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, Make in India campaign, is set to go a step further with the government considering making important sectors source chips made from local manufacturers.
There’s now a proposal to make it mandatory for the strategic sectors of Defence, Space and Atomic Energy to use ‘made in India’ chips, according to a report by the Economic Times .
This initiative is aimed at both boosting the Make in India campaign as well as meeting the national security standards.
The reports quotes sources saying that there have already been discussions on the matter and a meeting that included top government representatives from the strategic departments of space, atomic energy, information technology and defence research was held at the Niti Aayog recently.
Make in India is the government’s initiative to encourage companies to manufacture their products in India and was launched by PM Modi. The official website describes it as a major new national program designed to transform India into a global manufacturing hub.
Apart from boosting Indian industry, this move is also expected to help in matters of state security.
