Yes, Instagram photos can define which is the happiest country in the world.

Jetpac, a social travel guide app, has analyzed more than 150 million Instagram posts in 6,000 cities to come up with a ranking of the happiest countries in the world.

As Instagram images are shared in real, the score is also said to be determined in real.

Jetpac identified the smiles on the faces and then measured the shape and size of the smile in pixel. After analyzing it came up with a Smile Score for every single city in every country that shared their happy smiling images via Instagram.

The bigger the smile, the higher the smile score.

While smiles aren’t the only measure of happiness, it sure does show that people are having a great time.

“Smiles on the faces of millions of people in millions of photos are the most direct measure we have of happiness. Previous attempts to measure happiness have relied on survey questions or indirect measures. Jetpac is identifying smiles on faces and then measuring the shape and size of the smile - a small grin doesn’t score as highly as a broad smile. Smiling for the camera seems to be a cultural norm for a country,” the startup said in a blog post .

Brazil handily topped Jetpac’s list as the happiest country on the planet, followed by Nicaragua and Colombia.

So if you live in in Brazil you’d be much happier.Whatever the reason, people smile for Instagram photos in Brazil way more than anywhere else on the planet.

The top 10 was dominated by Latin American countries, with the Philippines the only country outside of the Americas to be included among the happiest nations.

While Brazil scored 60.8 out of 100 in the happiness ranking, Nicaragua came a close second with 59.4 and Colombia, Bolivia and Costa Rica took third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

Eastern European countries are obviously happier than their western counterparts, with Macedonia and Moldova taking 11th and 16th place, while the highest ranking western European country is tiny Luxembourg in 30th place, followed by Ireland in the 31st spot.

India just scored 81 in ranking but it is happier than both Sirlanka and China.
