Fifty-three year-old Ivan Menezes has joined Indra Nooyi, Anshu Jain, Ajay Banga, Rakesh Kapoor as Indian origin Fortune 500 CEOs as UK drinks maker Diageo today elevated Menezes as chief executive officer.
Menezes succeeds current CEO Paul Walsh, who is to leave the post at the end of June. The company confirmed this morning that Menezes would assume control on July 1, with Walsh supporting the transition until his retirement from Diageo in June 2014.

Menezes has served as the Chief Operating Officer of Diageo since 1 March, 2012 and was instrumental in buying stake in Vijay Mallya’s United Spirits. The deal made Diageo an undisputed leader in the fastest growing whiskey market more than a decade after Menezes sold some of Diageo’s trophy assets in India - a move that left Diageo on the fringes of India’s branded liquor industry for long.
Menezes began his career at Nestle’s India unit. He later moved to Booz Allen and entered the liquor industry when UDV and IDV were merging to form Diageo.
The 53-year-old Indian-born American joined Diageo in 1997 and has led the company’s most profitable business in the North American division.
