What was more surprising was that the editor took to Twitter to announce his resignation, probably a first in the history of journalism in India.

Varadarajan was appointed as the editor of _The Hindu_on 20 July, 2011 by Kasturi and Sons, the family that runs the newspaper.

He took charge of the 150-year old newspaper as an ongoing process to let professional staff man the editorial positions at The Hindu.

Following the decision to appoint him as the editor, N Ravi, Malini Parthasarathy and Nirmala Lakshman - both of whom were family members of N Ram - resigned from the positions of editor, executive editor, and joint editor respectively.

Speculation had already begun that Ravi could return to the newspaper as editor again but there was no official comment from the Hindu
