Universal Account Number or UAN is a unique identification number accorded to Employees Provident Fund (EPF) subscribers. This was introduced by the current NDA government in October 2014 .
According to the EPFO website, the UAN acts as an umbrella for the multiple member identities allotted to the same member by different establishments.
The idea is to link multiple member identification numbers to a single member to just one, universal number.
This will help the member to view details of all the member identification numbers linked to it. Once you are allotted a UAN, even when you change your job, you just need to give this number to the new organisation. The new employer will in turn link the new allotted member identification number to your UAN.
The main objective behind this function is to capture KYC details of its members in order to eliminate the dependency on the employer and improve the quality of service. The KYC details will be tagged against the allotted UAN, rather the member ID thereby eliminating the redundancy.
But then, do you have your UAN card with you? It is better to keep it handy.
It can be easily downloaded from the EFP website.
Here's how you go about downloading it:
First log on the EPF member portal: https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
On the right-hand side, enter your activated UAN, password, fill in the captcha and sign in.
You could create the password, if you already do not have one, by using the Forgot Password option.
Once you sign in, on the left hand side you will see the UAN Card. Click and you can download your UAN card and also print it out to keep it handy for any future use.
