Furthering Make in India: Modi govt to mint coins to honour Jamsetji Tata

“No Indian of the present generation had done more for the commerce and industry of India,” says Lord Curzon on Jamsetji Tata. He’s had cities, railway stations named after him and launched India’s biggest conglomerate, the Tata group. Now, Jamsetji Tata, one of India’s pioneering industrialists will be the next to be facilitated by the Indian government. [caption id=“attachment_2030533” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  IBN live.[/caption] The Prime Minister’s Office has decided to mint coins in honour of his 175th birth anniversary, which also furthers the Prime Minister’s Make in India initiative in the hope that it will make the current Indian industrialists more enthusiastic in their participation. According to  the Indian Express, the coins will be released at a small reception that will be held at Modi’s residence and the list of attendees is yet to be finalised. From 1880 until his death in 1904, he focused completely on three goals: setting up an iron and steel company, generating hydroelectric power, and creating a world-class educational institution in sciences. However only the Taj Mahal Hotel was completed during his lifetime. The government has finalised the set of Rs 100 and Rs 5 coins in silver depicting Jamsetji’s bust, and has been minted by the Kolkata mint. It will be sold at Rs 4,500 each. In the past, the government of India has minted coins to commemorate freedom fights, politicians and scientists the last one being Bharat Ratna awardee, Madan Mohan Malviya in 2013, according to TOI.
