Tata Motors -owned British premium car maker Jaguar Land Rover just launched its new, much publicized two-seater convertible sport scar F-Type in India today.
The Jaguar F-Type will be sold in India in two engine variants- V6 S and V8 S.
While the VS model will be priced at Rs 1.37 crore, the V8s will be priced at Rs 1.61 crore (ex-showroom Mumbai).
The V6 does a 0-100 dash in 5.3 seconds while the V8 does the same in about 4.3 seconds. The former can do a top speed of about 275kmph and the V8 tops out at 300kmph.
The S model is powered by Jaguar’s new 3-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine that provides 380 PS output, while the higher-end variant is powered by a 5-litre V8 supercharged petrol thathas a maximum power of 495PS.
F Type 380PS V6 petrol deliveries will begin by September this year but 340PS V6 will not launch in India.
The Jaguar F-Type was recently declared as the 2013 World Car Design of the Year and is designed by Ian Callum.
Mathew Beven, chief designer, however, says the car is deeply inspired by some of the engine modes of fighter jets, whileRohit Suri, Vice President at Jaguar Land Rover said the new F Type will be a game changer for the Indian sports car industry.
Impact Shorts
More Shorts“Jaguar India registered a 68 percent growth in sales in first quarter of this fiscal year, led by Jaguar XF,” added Suri, sounding bullish on the Indian market.
“The Jaguar F-Type is our all-new, two-seater sports car and we believe it will be a game changer for the Indian sports car market. With its stunning design and driver focused engineering, this car will further enhance the appeal of our brand and I am confident that it will arouse senses and stir emotions like no other car in India”, said Suri at the launch.
But with this kind of pricing, it remains to be seen if it can beat its competition -the Porsche Cayman and Boxster.
The F-Type was first unveiled at the Paris Auto Show 2012 and is the E-Type’s successor.
When asked if JLR is looking to assemble more models in India over and above the Land Rover Freelander 2 and the Jaguar XF sedan, Suri said: “Yes, we are continuously evaluating opportunities based on how good the volumes are.”
Suri, however, did not share which specific models from the JLR stable could be assembled at Tata Motors’ Pune facility saying “it will all depend on the business case”.
He also ruled out plans for full scale manufacturing of JLR products in India.
