Mumbai: Besieged with protests in various parts of the state owing to extended load shedding schedules in the wake of acute power shortage, Maharashtra Government will hold a meeting on the vexed issue soon.
“A meeting with the state power department will be convened in a day or two to find out the gravity of the situation,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told reporters here.
Factors like ongoing protests in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh over separate statehood issue and power plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh unable to generate sufficient power due to coal shortage are resulting in the power shortage in the state, he said.
Maharashtra is currently facing a power shortfall of 3,500 MW. When asked whether Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, will also subject to power cuts, Chavan did not elaborate.
As a result of power shortage, many parts of the state are facing extended load shedding schedules. Recent incidents like ransacking the offices of Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) in Vasai, Badlapur towns in Thane district and in Buldhana and Yavatmal districts in the eastern Maharashtra have forced the Congress-led Democratic Front government to sit up and take notice of the glaring issue.
The state power utility- Mahavitaran- has decided to impose 16 hours of staggering day for industries from this Wednesday. The load shedding will be imposed only once a week from Wednesday, a spokesperson from Mahavitaran said in a statement issued here last night.
