India wants a win-win, keen to stop misuse of DTAA with Mauritius

India is looking forward to stop the misuse of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with Mauritius and come up with a revised pact which will be mutually beneficial for both sides.

Visiting President Pranab Mukherjee has discussed with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam the issues pertaining to the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention and the progress in the discussions of the Joint Working Group (JWG) in its last two meetings, said Sudhir Vyas, the Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

“He (Mukherjee) reviewed what happened in the two meetings of the JWG - in 2011 and 2012. There has been progress in certain areas. There are issues pertaining to FDI that we all know and misuse of the treaties by certain elements and both the sides want to end this in a manner mutually beneficial - a win win situation.

“These discussions are continuing and the next meeting of the JWG is going to be held in first week of April,” he said.

In an interview published in Mauritius newspaper ‘Le Matinal’ yesterday, Mukherjee too had said India and Mauritius have been jointly working to find a mutually acceptable and beneficial outcome on the DTAA which will be a “win-win- situation” for both the countries.

“I am pleased to note that the Joint Working Group on the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) has met twice in the last one year. They have provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss all issues with the aim of finding a mutually acceptable and beneficial outcome,” Mukherjee had said.

Mauritius Prime Minister Ramgoolam had also said he had discussed the issue of DTAA with President Mukherjee during delegation level talks held here yesterday.

“We spoke about the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement. We have already found some common ground to find a solution. This is going to come to an end in April,” he had said.
