The two states earlier battled for industries but according to a report both Maharashtra and Gujarat state governments are now battling for motorists to use their petrol pumps by claiming that fuel is cheaper in their state.

The Gujarat government is didn’t take the claim lying down and has putting up similar hoardings claiming to be selling fuel at a lower price.

One of the hoardings read, “Maharashtra se petrol Rs 3.50 sasta hai. Aur diesel Rs 0.50 sasta hai.” (Petrol is cheaper by Rs 3.50 here than in Maharashtra, diesel is cheaper by Rs 0.50)

But what is the truth? Industry experts told DNA that petrol was cheaper in Maharashtra until a few months ago before a tax increase and gradual deregulation of fuel subsidy that led to surge in prices.

We did a quick check on the current prices, and we found while Ahmedabad sells petrol for Rs 78.01/litre, petrol is sold in Mumbai for Rs 81.57/litre.
