Narendra Modi may have promised to shake things up once he became the prime minister and he’s reportedly set to do it by changing the names of at least four ministries in the central government.
According to a Hindustan Times report, four ministries will be named differently:
- Ministry of environment & forests will become Ministry of environment, forests, and climate change.
- Ministry of shipping will become Ministry of shipping and ship-breaking.
- Ministry of water resources will become the Ministry of water resources, Ganga rejuvenation and river development.
- Ministry of sports and youth affairs will become the Ministry of skill development, entrepreneurship, youth affairs and sports.
The Gujarat influence cannot be missed in one of the name changes. Ship breaking while under the ambit of the ministry of shipping, is also headquartered at Alang which lies in Gujarat and according to some estimates may be the biggest ship breaking yard in the world now.
The Ganga also finds special mention in the water resources ministry given the focus that the Modi government is expected to place on the cleaning up of the river and acquires special significance given that the Prime Minister’s constituency, Varanasi, is a crucial part of any scheme to rejuvenate the river.
The addition of skill development and entrepreneurship to the ministry of youth affairs also comes as as a surprise given Modi’s thrust on the two aspects during his election campaign.
While the names of the ministries will undergo a makeover, it remains to be seen whether it will impact their functioning.
