Foul play in CAT 2012 scores: 80 students get inflated marks

In a revelation that will impact MBA admissions based on CAT 2012 scores and shake up the credibility of the exam, IIMs have admitted that scorecards available officially to non-IIMs for admission have been ’tampered’ with.

In a notification on Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) website , a disclosure says, “the 2012 Common Admission Test (CAT) scores of 80 examinees on the website www.catiim.in have been tampered/altered, resulting in inflation of scores for these examinees.”

They realised it could not be a technical error since test IDs are not in any particular order.

The 2012 CAT convenor said the master database of all the scores, provided to the IIMs by testing services provider Prometric, is unaltered. The “inflation” only occurred at the website - managed by Web Weavers - a web-hosting agency.

A case had been registered on 15 June, 2013 at Kozhikode by 2012 CAT convenor, and investigation is under process.

The website noted that the IIMs were not affected by the error since they use scores from the master database for granting admissions. But, the CAT scores were also used by some non-IIM institutes, which rely upon the online scores.

According to the India Today report, the “inflated” results have affected top-ranked Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) in Delhi University and the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) in Noida.

The report also noted that nine candidates with inflated scores have been offered seats in BIMTECH while five have applied to FMS. However, with this new report, the candidates are likely to lose their seats.
