New Delhi: The banking sector has done a “commendable” job in giving equal opportunities to women and other corporate sectors should take a lesson from it, Bajaj Auto Vice-Chairman Madhur Bajaj said today.

“If banks can do it, so can all the other sector,” he said, adding that “the banking sector is a case in point with CEO ranging from Chanda Kochhar, ICICI and Arundhati Bhattacharya, SBI to Naina Lal Kidwai, HSBC, who is also president of FICCI and Shikha Sharma, Axis Bank and so many more.”

However, Thermax Chairperson Meher Pudumjee said that apart from banking, women’s representation is very less. “In the manufacturing and other industries it in single digit,” she said, adding that women would have to become self confident.

Bajaj futher said: “They (women) must see themselves as equal to men, not in any way inferior and their behavior, conduct and attitude must reflect that.” India is ranked 101 among the 136 countries surveyed in the 2013 WEF report in the domain of women inclusion and emancipation, he added.

Hightlighting the importance of women employees, Bajaj said that in the corporate sector, companies that have more women on board and at senior levels of management, are more profitable.

The country’s first all-women Bharatiya Mahila Bank, a pioneering initiative to empower women, was today launched with a corpus of Rs 1,000 crore to function as a universal bank.
