Mumbai: Residents of the illegally-constructed floors in the Campa Cola residential compound have begun to examine their options after the Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday that they would be evicted by the end of May next year.

“The occupants are waiting to see the copy of the order passed by the apex court. We are not giving up hopes. There has to be some way out. Let our legal team come back and we will sit together to decide our future course of action,” a resident of the compound Nandini Mehta said.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Sitaram Kunte said the civic administration would follow the Supreme Court order.

“We have learnt about the order. We will abide by it,” he said.

The court has asked residents to submit an undertaking within six weeks of the decision saying that they would vacate their flats.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Housing Sachin Ahir asked Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to clarify his stand on the Campa Cola compound issue.

“The state government should have taken a decision earlier. It is not good to make occupants suffer. I will meet the chief minister after tomorrow’s cabinet meeting,” Ahir told reporters.
