It looks as if Dropbox is set take on the very popular Google Docs. The cloud storage service company just announced its entry into the online document editing space with the public beta release of ‘Paper’ – a collaborative text editing tool.
Six months ago, Dropbox had announced an invite-only collaborative platform, but didn’t reveal much about the service then. But, now the tool has been officially named as Dropbox Paper.
Just like Google Docs, Dropbox Paper too lets users to edit a document in real time with their Dropbox contacts, as well as multiple users can also work on a single document simultaneously.
As of now Paper is simple and minimalistic tool with just one font and three font sizes to choose from. Beyond text, users can insert images, code, tables and even to-do lists complete with “@” mentions to identify who is in charge of completing a certain task.
Users can browse their Dropbox and add a Dropbox link directly in the document. Paper will automatically change these links into images and videos . It also does the same with other web content, such as YouTube videos, SoundCloud songs and more.
They can also write to-do lists with “@” mentions to notify who is in charge of completing a certain task.
For now, Paper is a web application that can be accessed through Dropbox account, however the company says it will roll out a mobile app once the product is out of beta.
