Naveen Jindal (a sitting MP [INC] from the Kurukshetra constituency), who has declared assets worth a whopping Rs 131.07 crore, is the richest candidate in India’s upcoming general elections so far, according to available data.
Clearly, gone are the days when Members of Parliament were looked upon as servants of the country, surviving on tax payers’ rupees and ekeing out modest livelihoods. Today, every MP worth his salt has his fingers in multiple pies, giving him or her numerous streams of revenue.
The Association for Democratic Reforms and the National Election Watch combed the declared financial assets of 188 candidates who filed affidavits (203 candidates were announced) to be fielded by the Congress and the BJP, as announced until 8 March, 2014.
Apart from Jindal, other rich candidates includeRatna Singh (Sitting MP [INC] from Pratapgarh constituency) with assets worth Rs 67.82 crore, andKazim Ali Khan (Naved Miyan) of INC from Rampur constituency, with assets worth Rs 56.89 crore.
Shivkumari C. Udasi [BJP] from Haveri constituency has the highest asset value of any BJP candidate at Rs 32.33 crore, according to data filed by the candidates surveyed.
