Now an award for going desi: Dunkin Donuts' motichoor laddoo gets its due

The world's largest doughnut chainDunkin' Donuts had gone desi long time back with the launch ofcoconut rasgulla, petal gulab jamun andmotichoor laddoodoughnutsin India. But, finally, after two years, the chef's innovative ideas have been awarded when he was chosen as the best employee at theannual CEO's club champion award.

According to an Economic Times report today, the award is usually won bythe sales and marketing teams. But this time, the chain's head chef PeterD'Mello twisted the trend. The creative chef studied at Cornell University in New York. In 2012, he set up a product development labkitchen at Jubilant Food Works in Noida.

Dunkin' Donuts has partnered with fast food operator Jubilant Foodworks, which runs the Domino's Pizza chain in the country. The firm has rolled out 10 stores in India in the last two years, and plans to open around 100 outlets in India over the next five years.

But Dunkin' is not the first fast-food retailer to localise their menu to suit the Indian taste. The Chicken Maharaja-Mac - a beef-free take on the Big Mac - has long featured in McDonald's Indian menu. You will never find roast beef in theIndian Subway menu that is available in the US stores, and the ham is made of chicken.

Then there's Domino's Pizza which has Indianised all its pizza to suit the Indian taste--there's a corn and black olive pizza for the vegetarians (the "Gourmet") and keema do pyaaza topping -- ground lamb and onions -- for meat eaters.

Kellogg India, the maker of cornflakes, Chocos, Special K and Heart-to-Heart oats rolled out variants like pudina, tomato and garam masala for its oats range a couple of years back to pep up its Indian portfolio.

But, Dunkin's chief chefD'Mello is not stopping. According to the ET report, he is now travelling to rural Bihar to get an idea of local cuisine and implement them in doughnuts.Sattu Paratha doughnuts anyone?
