AirAsia India today announced its first flight would be from Bangalore to Goa and tickets would be priced at Rs 990, reports said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if this price was inclusive of various taxes.
The announcement regarding the first flight was made in Chennai by AirAsia India CEO Mittu Chandilya, reported the Hindu Business Line.
Booking will start on the airline website at 9:30 pm this evening, Chandilya was quoted as saying in a Times of India report.
Chandilya also said the airline would launch its Bangalore-Chennai flight on 20 June.
The first A320 flight is scheduled to leave Bangalore onJune 12 afternoon, AirAsia India CEO Mittu Chandilya toldreporters.
“AirAsia will be opening up the bookings this evening. By9.30 pm our fares will be up there in our website. Our firstroute will be from Bangalore to Goa and Goa to Bangalore. Weare very excited about that,” Chandilya said.
“Our collective goal is that every Indian should have anopportunity to fly. We have our plane parked here already,” hesaid.
Responding to a query, Chandilya said that by end of thisfinancial year, the airline hopes to connect 10 cities, with10 aircraft.
“We have about 300 people right now. Basically, we haveabout 80 people for one aircraft,” he said to a query on howmany people the airline would be adding this financial year.
The airline will begin operations with a single aircraft but expects to expand its fleet to 8 by the year end.
Despite objections from competitors like IndiGo and an airline body, the Tata-AirAsia venture was given its licence to operate on 21 February.
However, the new Prime Minister’s office has sent a note to the Ministry of Civil Aviation on 19 May asking for all documentation related to substantial ownership and effective control clause of AirAsia. BJP’s Subramaniam Swamy had also opposed the flying license granted to the airline in the Delhi high court but his plea was rejected.
AirAsia India is a three way joint venture in which AirAsia BhD holds a 49 per cent stake, Tata Sons holds 30 per cent and another Indian entity, Telestra Tradeplace holds the remaining 21 per cent.
The first aircraft of AirAsia, an Airbus A320, landed in Chennai on 22 March. The aircraft is configured with an all economy layout of 180 seats from the Airbus factory in Toulouse.
