At 250 kgs, Bajaj Auto's 'U' car is the lightest four wheeler in India

Greater Noida: Bajaj Auto managing director Rajiv Bajaj told Firstbiz that his ‘U’ car will have much higher top speed than the RE60 and that the passenger vehicle is just 250 kg in weight! This makes the ‘U’ car the lighest four wheeler in India.

Apart from being a two seater which comes with automatic transmission, the ‘U’ car will also have another first: scissor doors.

Bajaj said scissor doors open upwards instead of usual car doors opening outwards and this has been done to ensure that tight parking in urban spaces does not become a nightmare for ‘U’ car users.

Bajaj’s Chief Technology Officer A Joseph said ‘U’ won’t be positioned as a cheap car and Bajaj will not fight on price for this vehicle. So will the U car be below Rs 2 lakh?

Though Tata Nano is the nearest competitor, the difference is U is a two seater and will come with an automatic transmission. It may not be launched in 2014 but one thing is sure: the U car could redefine intra city travel in the not-so-distant future in India.

Joseph said though there are many two seaters in other markets but the U car will be different because it will not be as premium as two seaters in other markets. Basically, this is a step up for bike owners. Now where have we heard that line before? Ratan Tata lamented two wheeler commute by families while launching the Nano.
