Budget 2024: 10 schemes with biggest allocations

In Budget 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an allocation of more than Rs 1,000 crore in about 140 major government schemes with the highest being allocated to Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).

Here’s a look at the top 10 schemes with the biggest allocations in the Union Budget 2024-2025.

1 - Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY)

Rs 2,05,250 crore has been allocated to Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). This scheme is a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat and under this, the government provides 5 kg food grains per month to migrants and poor free of cost.

2 - Urea Subsidy

The Budget 2024-25 has allocated Rs 1,19,000 crore for the urea subsidy scheme which ensures timely and affordable availability of urea. The primary goal of the urea subsidy scheme is to support agricultural productivity to ensure food supply.

3 - National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)

The Modi government has allocated Rs 1,68,464 crore in Budget 2024 for NHAI which will help in the development, maintenance and management of National Highways.

4 - Road Works (MoRTH)

For Road Works under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the government has allocated Rs 1,15,093 crore in the Union Budget 2024. It aims to provide road safety information for road users to encourage safer road user behavior among current and prospective road users and reduce the number of people killed and injured on Indian roads every year.

5 - Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (MNREGA)

Rs 86,000 crore has been allocated for MGNREGA. The programme was launched in 2006 to enhance the livelihood security of households in rural areas of the country by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

6 - Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)/ National Rural Drinking Water Mission

The government has allocated Rs 70,163 crore for the al Jeevan Mission (JJM)/ National Rural Drinking Water Mission which aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household taps by 2024 to all households in rural India.

As of July 23, 2024, of the total 19,32,01,153 rural households, 77.65 per cent or 15,00,27,135 houses have tap connections.

7 - Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan)

For the benefit of farmers, the Budget 2024 has allocated Rs 60,000 crore for the PM-Kisan scheme. The scheme aims to supplement the financial needs of the small and marginal farmers (SMFs) by procuring various inputs to ensure proper crop health and appropriate yields, commensurate with the anticipated farm income at the end of each crop cycle. It also helps protect farmers from falling into the clutches of moneylenders to meet such expenses and ensure their continuance in farming activities.

8 - Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) - Rural

The government has allocated Rs 54,500 crore to Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY). The scheme was launched in 2015 and aims to provide affordable and modern housing to people living below the poverty line.

9 - Nutrient Based Subsidy

Budget 2024 has allocated Rs 45,000 crore to the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme that provides subsidies for all non-urea-based fertilizers. The scheme was established to promote fertilisation of the soil in a balanced manner to boost agricultural output and improve farm returns.

10 - Aircraft and Aero Engines

Sitharaman in her Budget speech also announced the allocation of Rs 40,278 crore for Aircraft and Aero Engines.
