This week, we had Lego’s commercial promoting its Star Wars Microfighters range up for review. Watch the ad here:

We spoke to three copywriters - Avni Chinoy, creative supervisor, Grey Digital; Megha Ramesh, creative group head - copy, Happy Creative Services and Ameya Bahulekar, senior copywriter, Havas Worldwide and asked them what they thought about the ad. Read their opinion below:

Does the ad get a ‘yay’ or a ’nay’ from you?

Avni: Can I say Meh? It’s Lego! Expectations are higher

Megha: Definitely a yay! I’ll never forget how much it hurts to step on a Lego piece. You should always listen to mother when she tells you to clean your room.

Ameya: It made me chuckle, so yay!

What is your favourite thing about the commercial?

Avni: The scream! And tinyLegobaby Darth. I need him in my life. Now.

Megha: I love that you don’t need to be a Star Wars fan to get this ad. We’ve ALL been that guy. Multiple times.

Ameya: Legos hurt when you step on them. We’ve all been there. It’s fun to see someone else feeling the pain. Yeah, scream you!

Also, that tiny little Darth Vader staring into your soul with his plastic Lightsaber was so bad**s.

And the least favourite?

Avni: His ankles! If this ad won an ad for best supporting actor, his ankles would stand up to receive it.

Megha: I can’t think of anything bad about this one. It’s Lego! And someone gets hurt at the end. What’s not to like?

Ameya: Nothing in particular. It’s short and to the point. Drives home the message perfectly.

In one line, what do you think is the insight for this ad?

Avni: One man woke up to eat ice cream at night. What happens next will shock you.

Megha: Lego.Star Wars.Go!

Ameya: Legos are tiny little landmines in the dark (side).

Suppose you had to make an ad starring Darth Vader. What product would it be for and why?

Avni: Speech correction classes? Let’s end it with ‘Unleath your Darth Tide’ #oksorrybye

Megha: Digging deep into my limited Star Wars knowledge, I’d probably use him for a service that lets you track down MIA biological parents - so there are no surprises when you finally meet them!

Ameya: In my head, it starts off with Darth Vader majestically walking with a couple of storm troopers on the Death Star. The Star Wars theme music plays in the background. He increases his pace and finally stops at a door. The next thing you see is a close up shot of his face. We hear him breathing. We zoom out and see him sitting on the commode.

Then the super comes in:

“When you need that little extra force.
‘Empire Laxatives’. May the force be with poo.”
