Decor Extraordinaire – ‘Cabins' – The ‘Humble Abode’

“It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home.”

Celebrity homes and glamour go hand in hand. But beyond the glitz and glamour, there is a thing or two all of us can learn from such homes, about extraordinary interior décor and design for building the home of our dreams.

One such majestic mansion is that of the Tata Sons’ Chairman Emeritus and Business Magnate, Ratan Tata. This sea-facing three-story bungalow in Colaba, Mumbai, ‘Cabins’, with seven levels covered in glass windows from ground to ceiling and an infinity pool on the terrace does not fail to impress with its contemporary, elegant architecture!  13.5 metres above the ground, the pretty bungalow has been built on a sprawling 13,350 square feet plot, nearby the Bombay House, the Tata Sons’ head office.

Much like a studio apartment, the ground floor consists of a living room, a kitchen, a study and a bedroom, all of them lifted a few feet above the ground.

Different floors for different purposes

Each floor in the industrialist’s home is divided into two levels where the living rooms occupy the first level on each floor, while the second levels boast of the lavish bedrooms and other facilities. The entire first floor is covered with a massive sun deck for abundant light and space for big parties, enough to accommodate around 50 people. Adding to the surprise element is an in-built bar and barbeque corner. Besides this, a living room, two bedrooms and a study occupy the first floor.

With three exquisite bedrooms, a sophisticated library and a spacious living area, the second floor can be in itself, called the ‘dream abode’. However, it is the third floor with its gigantic media room, a bedroom as well as a swimming pool, a sundeck, a lounge and Tata’s personal gym on the second level, that forms his most favourite and cherished section in the entire mansion.

Not only do the rooms boast of architectural magnificence and grace, they are also richly private, ideal especially for spending some lone time! Nothing could have been a better retirement pad after the corporate leader opted to withdraw into his retreat.

The white house also has enough space in its basement for servant quarters and a rich car collection of the business baron.

Where simplicity meets grandeur

Albeit simple in appearance, ‘Cabins’ gives the best-possible sea-view and is undoubtedly one of the costliest homes in India, priced at a whopping Rs. 125 -150 crores.

The decor is light with huge glass windows, kempt looks and pearly white appearance, both indoors and outdoors. The corporate icon reiterates the idea of ‘less is more’ with lighter colour shades and minimalist decor through ‘Cabins.’

Elegantly extraordinary

‘Elegance over extravagance’ as Mumbai Mirror had first termed Tata’s bungalow in the heritage precinct, is what even Asian Paints Royale experts suggest for turning your ‘humble abode’ to your ‘mansion of dreams’. Minimal decor on walls and ceilings or accessorizing your home rightly can create a huge difference to the persona of your living space.

Experimenting with textures and bright hues of greens, lilacs, jade blues, peaches, yellows and oranges on one of the walls of your bedroom or living area can make your home look more like an extension of your personality. Accessorizing need not be extravagant either but doing it the right way will definitely make your home ‘extraordinary’. Instead of boring, sweet and ‘nice’, choose cheerful, awesome yet ‘subtle’ with a light-textured mat or a classy beige or grey tone on your textiles and fabrics. Even plain dark wood frames on a bright-hued wall would make your space stand out, say the experts. Classy silk curtains or light pinks, whites and blues can add that extra sheen that you have longed for in your personal abode.

If greens are your companion, bring them into your home and make it a happier place that would even soothe your mind and calm your senses. Just a little space in your balcony and you would not even know when it turned into a mini garden!

Further, lighting with lamps and candles can help you bring your space alive too. Be ready to turn on the magic with just a stained glass mini lamp or irresistibly aromatic candles! Add these simple ideas to your house and see it turn into an extraordinary blissful paradise screaming happiness all around!
