Honda is trying to break away from the mould of being just another family car with its new Honda Civic Type R video titled ‘The Other Side’. The digital innovation involved in superimposing one video on another is very cool but the enticing storyline draws us in further.
On one hand it shows us the happy version, the doting dad spending time with his kids and the parallel video switches to his darker, villainous double sidethat shows him involvedin nefarious activities, showing us two different versions of the same man.
But things are not as they seem.
The dad who up until now we assume is the bad guy/ getaway driver for criminals at the end turns out to be the good guy/ undercover cop.
And of course the fact that he presses the R button on the steering to go into turbo mode reminds the viewer of the car’s name every time they press the R button to toggle through the two videos. It’s the quintessential good versus bad angle with a twist.
Honda with this new video has also gone where it couldn’t go before. It switches from its older “dependable” reputation, onecould even say boring version to a sexier, exciting version that deals withits impeccable racing history. As the getaway driver the dad takes part in some adrenaline pumping driving through dark tunnels, empty highways and roads.
Froma concept car to one thatwill go on sale at the Geneva Motor show in 2015, the Japanese company has successfully built enough intrigue and mystery around the new Type-R and the new commercial only increases anticipation for it.
