“We see a big opportunity in cloud, big data and HPC in India,” says Sandeep Lodha, marketing director at Tyrone Systems. The company, based in Bangalore, provides storage and computing solutions for enterprise datacentres and high performance computing (HPC) environments.
Talking about trends and challenges in high performance computing in India, Lodha shares the datacentre development needs two uncompromised ingredients – power and connectivity. Unfortunately, this is where we lag behind, he feels. While the connectivity is being worked out, the power situation has been the biggest culprit for the lack of datacentre growth in India.
Apart from Big Data, high performance computing, although still in its nascent stages, is growing at a rapid pace, he believes. From defence, energy and pharmaceutical products and solutions to potato wafers and toilet papers are already using the power of HPC today. “This is one technology which will see a tremendous amount of usage in coming years. We do see a big future globally and for India too. India could a pivotal role in taking lead in this knowledge-based industry by providing for the right human resources that the world will require,” he adds.

In India, according to Lodha, the adoption of HPC is boosted by government spending by Oil & Gas, Life Sciences & Manufacturing. HPC is on a rise and is poised to grow further.
Keeping this upcoming opportunity in mind, Tyrone, with over 300 HPC installations in India, recently announced the availability of ‘Tyrone Edra’ – cloud based HPC-on-demand solution to customers on demand and on a Pay-as-You-Use basis. The solution, which is available to both enterprises and individual customers, targets education and research, manufacturing and engineering, financial services, life and material sciences, and media and entertainment. “The service can be used for few hours or even for months and is accessible anytime, anywhere,” according to the company.
“With the flexible pricing provided by Tyrone Edra with as little as the usage of $1 an hour, smaller companies can avoid investing in capex and apex intensive application environment,” Lodha claims.
