Sun Microsystems Surges Ahead In External Storage Market

Sun Microsystems recently achieved a new landmark in the Indian external storage market.
As per IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly Disk Storage System Tracker Q2 2008 release, Sun Microsystems garnered a 22 percent market share as per customer revenue calculations. The India external storage market according to IDC grew by 48 percent, whereas Sun’s share in this market grew by 103 percent year-on-year (Q2 2008 over Q2 2007).

Sankalp Shrie, senior manager, Computing Products Research, IDC India, said, “The significant increase in Sun’s market share (from 16 percent in Q2 2007) can be attributed to product innovation combined with their excellent sales and marketing efforts. This is reflected in deals signed by the Sun team across verticals, especially in the still untapped Indian retail segment”.

Sivasankaran, director, Storage Practice, Sun Microsystems India, said, “Sun today offers a broad product portfolio across both open systems and mainframes. Over the last few years, Sun external storage has been gaining momentum in India with new customers across verticals and improved channel performance”.
