Optimising Energy Usage In The Datacentre
Arun Gupta, Customer Care Associate & Group CTO, Shoppers Stop Limited gives his insights on data management and energy optimisation.
How are you managing your data intelligently? What are the innovative ways that you have adopted?
We virtualised our storage four years back and last year refreshed the SAN/NAS combination with double the capacity using similar power. We also use deduplication technologies to optimise the overall storage as well as backups. In our stores, we are progressively moving to disk-based (NAS) backups eliminating tapes.
What pain-points do CIOs/IT heads have with regard to data consolidation? How can they overcome them?
CIOs must keep on looking at new technologies as they evolve, specifically around data deduplication and lifecycle management. This is largely manageable but requires step-by-step approach towards ensuring that the availability is not impacted. In the short term, data consolidation may appear to be of high cost, but over a 12-24 month time period, ROI is easily achievable.
How can CIOs optimise energy usage in the datacentre?
Energy usage in the datacentre can be optimised using multiple steps. Some of these include, reducing the number of servers by virtualisation; reducing the number of applications by consolidating them, which has a direct impact on the number of servers required; and refreshing the legacy servers with power efficient servers. These steps will reduce the power required as well as cooling requirements which again impacts power. Installing person sensing lights, which reduce the power used and using racks that can improve airflow thereby reducing the cooling required, are also ways in which energy can be optimised in the datacentre.
How has Shoppers Stop optimised energy in the datacentre?
We have more than 80% of our servers virtualised, running on multi-core servers that were procured in the last 12-24 months. This has resulted in the number of racks remaining the same despite growth in applications as well as data volume going up by 100%. We outsourced the datacentre and co-located with a third party as we believe that they can create higher efficiencies with continuous investments that we can.
