Nasscom has announced that it would be organising ‘Cyber Safe Thane’, a three day awareness campaign on Cyber safety and security issues for customers, industry, academia, and other stakeholders in Thane (on the outskirts of Mumbai) from September 18-20th, 2008.

Nasscom has taken a holistic view of Information Security through its ‘Trusted Sourcing’ initiative (launched in 2005) to strengthen the regulatory framework and further improve India’s attractiveness as an outsourcing destination. This multi-pronged initiative is targeted at employees, organisations, enforcement agencies and policy amendment, through a ‘4E Framework’ - Engagement, Education, Enactment and Enforcement.

Ameet Nivsarkar, vice president, Nasscom, said, “Even though a lot of people are using the Internet, general awareness about the cyber world and security measures for the online medium is comparatively low. This is a cause for concern given today’s rapidly growing Internet usage. Additionally, more and more companies are using this medium to conduct business, and hence, need to be aware about best practices as well as possible pitfalls. Nasscom has taken a number of steps through its initiatives in this area. Cyber Safe Thane, a public private partnership, is an extension of our efforts to educate users and make them aware of the best practices for using this medium.”

Anil Dhere, Commisioner of Police, Thane, said, “We are collaborating with Nasscom-DSCI for spreading awareness on cyber security issues and dealing with cyber crime using the public private partnership for the larger benefit of society. We look forward to a long-term engagement with various stakeholders along with Nasscom-DSCI to promote online best practices.”

Nasscom is looking to arrange discussions and interactions with students, parents, corporate, lawyers, judiciary, cyber cafe owners, heads of Cyber Crime Cells and people at large to spread awareness about the cyber space, security issues and preventive measures. The activities will be focused on high impact areas like financial services, BPO sector, user community, child safety issues and the rising menace of cyber crimes.
