GoodWorkLabs is considered as one of the successful bootstrapped startups with 500 percent year-on-year growth. Founded in 2013, the outsourced product development (OPD) firm and UX design studio has helped build software, mobile and gaming products with clients and partners like Flipkart, Apple, Samsung, Hindustan Unilever and others. Headquartered in Bengaluru, it has offices in San Francisco Bay area, USA and Kolkata. It is the the only company in India to be nominated for the International UX Design Awards by IDZ Germany. Founded by Sonia Sharma and baked by Vishwas Mudagal as its first investor, it is a team of over 80 people. “We had identified a key gap in the IT services industry—the lack of product building experience and a culture of fostering innovation. We wanted to bring our vast experience in building high-end products, creating R&D teams, design focus and our understanding of the startup ecosystem to be the ‘product’ guys in the ‘services’ industry. And we were bang on target,” co-founder Sonia Sharma tells us. Sharma has completed Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from UIIT in 2004. Prior to that, she has worked with Arcot Systems (bought over by CA) and Aveksa (bought over by EMC). Mudagal is a serial entrepreneur and a best-selling author. He started his first company, Infovision Computer Academy at the age of eighteen to educate rural students in North Karnataka and joined GoodWorkLabs as its CEO in 2014. Sharma adds that GoodWorksLabs’ USP is design thinking. The startup has an in-house UX design studio and a seasoned design team that helps design products with aesthetic value and that are easy to use. “The best companies in the world have hired GoodWorkLabs to design the UX and visual design of their products, apps and games. Most products we build impact millions of lives and shape the future of technology and industry,” she adds. “The products we have built for our clients have reached millions of users worldwide and we are now set to take it to the next level by launching the best-in-class enterprise mobility platform called GoodWorks Mobility through which we will strength our clientele and footprint globally,” explains Sharma. In fact, the roadmap for 2016 includes GoodWorks Mobility. It is expected to launch shortly and the company has signed up a marquee clients for pilots. “That’s super validation that the product will succeed because we have been very practical in our approach and worked with clients to make it better. We are very excited about this launch and this product will be most probably handled by a separate entity. With this move, we will become a group of companies,” adds Mudagal. Mudagal points out that the foundation of the company is beauty with aesthetic and practical design, scalability, agility and innovation. Mudagal put in the initial capital of Rs 25 lakh and the company managed to grow 500 percent in the first financial year itself. “We initially saw a rolling revenue of $0.5 million in 2014-15, which grew on to become five-fold to $2.5 million in 2015-16 and we are going strong,” he adds. The startup isn’t looking for any funding, rather is ready to fund and incubate a few startups as a part of their diversification drive. They make money by charging companies to custom-build solutions.  In case of long term projects, clients pay on a monthly basis and if projects are small in size, then they opt for a fixed bid method. Moreover, it also charges on per project basis for the UX / UI design. The company also plans to expand in key geographies around the world including Europe and APAC. The company plans to setup its second office in London next year and also double its headcount.
