Administrators at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) are running the campus with confidence thanks to Ingres Corporation, a provider of open source database management software and support services. IIT Delhi adopted Ingres Database to support critical administration functions such as grading, finance, human resources, procurement, and hospital administration.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the seven institutes of technology created as centres of excellence for higher training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India. More than 10,000 students and 2,000 staff make up the bustling campus. IIT Delhi needed reliable systems to support its growth. Ingres has enabled IIT Delhi to build and manage mission critical applications. After Ingres became open-source, IIT Delhi has been upgrading its applications to the current version.
“As Ingres based applications and databases are easy to maintain, we are already seeing significant savings in technical resource deployment,” said Ashvin K Gosain, professor and head, Administrative Computerisation Support Services at IIT Delhi. “The Ingres open source database addresses and exceeds our requirement for mission critical applications.”
Vivek Bhatnagar, country director and global alliances lead for Ingres in India, said, “IIT Delhi appreciates the importance of adopting an open source solution and the benefits it receives from a lower cost of ownership in both the absence of licence fees as well as the savings related to flexible support and service options. More and more educational institutions are turning to open source for these very same reasons.”
