3 Steps For Android OverClocking

There is more than one way, in which you can derive greater value from your rooted Android phone. Upgrading to Froyo 2.2 would be the first on that list, while some others like USB Tethering and OverClocking could be the next best options. But is it really worth going through the trouble of rooting and putting another modded OS and making things difficult for yourself? Going through the ordeal of reading up complicated processes on forums, downloading software, pressing the appropriate buttons during the startup of your device can be very painful at times.

In this article, I have tried to give a short account of how I overclocked my Motorola Milestone in less than 15 minutes by a simple 3-way process. These steps may or may not be applicable to your Android device, as each hardware has a different modular engineering with the Android OS. So, think again before you do it.

So here we go….

Things I had before I started -

Motorola Milestone (unrooted)
Universal Androot (rooting app)
Milestone Overclock (Overclocking app)

Chapter 1
_
The Rooting - On a rainy afternoon, when Angelo was absolutely bored of sleeping, playing on his gaming rig and messing with his rather slow Android phone, an idea dawned from the heavens above and came pouring down like a sheet of rain, giving birth to ‘Overclocking.’_

Ok, so getting down to business, the Milestone is a pretty sturdy device but make sure you have charged your Android phone to the fullest so that it does not drain out during the process. Once you have dropped these apps on your SD card, just enable the option from Settings>Application Settings>Unknown Sources, which will allow you to install 3rd party unsigned apps.

Install the Universal Androot app and have the rooting done. It’s a one click process, which says root or unroot. Once the rooting is done, an alternate app called SuperUser Access Controller gets installed on the device. After this process is complete, just make sure that you restart your device so that the Superuser Access Request gets activated at startup.

Chapter 2
_
The OverClocking - Planting an idea is not simple and so isn’t OverClocking, but yeah, it’s also not rocket science! The rainy afternoon was turning into a stormy evening with thundering and lighting. I felt the heavens were waiting for the Milestone to become a beast. Like a lion waiting to get out of his cage. And then…._

Let’g get back to business then, the restart of your device makes the kernel restart and also helps in SuperUser Access Control gets activation. After this, go to the SD card location where the Milestone Overclock app is and install it. Because your 3rd party apps install permissions are enabled, you won’t have a problem installing this too. Recently, I saw this app on the Android Market too, so I guess you can download it from there directly and install it.

Once installed, the interface opens. Make sure that before you do anything just refresh and load the module. and press apply. After that, I guess your Android device’s speed would be shown in MHZ. Mine showed as 550MHZ. So, I increased, the band from 550MHz to 1200MHz (1.2GHz). After I did that, I applied the setting one more time and restarted the phone.

Chapter 3

The Roaring - And then…. like a roaring from the underground, I saw a monster rise. It was dark and raining and the only light I could see was the fractional Lighting effect. The Monster untamed and raw, wanted to break out of the shackles, I had given the power, the lighting had struck and the beast was here to stay.

Sorry for the ‘Lord of the Rings’ sort of introduction to each chapter, but I just got a little inspired abd revved up. Resuming the overclocking spree, there was absolute silence when I was restarting it. As, I restarted the device, every single thing came on fine, as though no change had been made. I was not completely satisfied, so I started the Milestone overclock again, and what I got was a breathless view of a 1200MHz frequency. The device had been overclocked successfully and now it was time to put it to the test. I went to the home screen and started the Opera Mini browser and whoopie!, it gave me the Opera start page with the speed dial (time taken 1.5sec). I was just beginning to smile and as I opened a couple of other apps, I was amazed at the speed at which things were happening. There was a massive time difference in the earlier opening, operations, closing of apps and other functions after clocking happened.

Now any app or search is just a click away. Uninstalling apps happened in a blink. Overclocking brings out the real potential of a phone. Manufacturers usually make the clock speeds to less than one third for durability and battery life and all that jazz. Now, I did hear something about the battery draining out and I wanted to put that to the test; hence, started using the phone for emails, calls, texting, GPS and IM. But there was hardly any difference.

Result - Your device is now roaring like He-Man’s Battle Cat.

Conclusion - Hope you loved the drama and if you didn’t like it, buy some sense of humour. Just post your feedback as a comment, or email it @ angelo.mathews@web18.in. There is always a risk in doing these things, so please be very careful when modding your expensive device. Until next time then- Stay Overclocked…..Stay Android!!!
