When it comes to philanthropy Indians don’t share the table with the likes of Bill Gates but still there are a few who do really donate and education is the most important area for Indian philanthropists with a total contribution of Rs 12,200 crore.
While Azim Premji of Wipro is the most generous Indian with a donation of Rs 8,000 crore in the past year, HCL group Chairman Shiv Nadar is the second highest contributor with a donation of Rs 3,000 crore, according to the Hurun India Philanthropy List 2013.
Now it seems even the Hero Group, which has business interests ranging from automobiles to financial services, is foraying into education. On Wednesday, the Munjal family, promoter of the Hero Group, announced the opening of BML Munjal University in Haryana. This is not their first tryst with education. The Munjal family is also the founder promoter of Indian School of Business, Mohali.

The university will be run by the Munjal family, through a foundation. The university, which will kick start from the next academic year will offer courses in engineering, management and liberal arts. It is a not-for profit initiative.
So the first batch will commence in July 2014. It will offer 60 seats each for BBA and MBA courses, and 30 for engineering.
Named after the Hero Group co-founder and chairman Brijmohan Lall Munjal, the university aspires to nurture ethical leaders who are skilled, knowledgeable and have the life skills required for leading their organisations to success, the group said in its statement.

The institute will charge annual fees of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 3 lakh for bachelor’s in business administration, engineering and master’s in business administration programmes, respectively.
According to a report in The Economic Times, BMU has tied up with the Imperial College London for courses in management and engineering. Imperial College will co design the curriculum, facilitate student and faculty exchange programmes conduct joint research activities and establish digital learning platforms.
The BM University has get all necessary clearances from the state of Haryana and other rest approvals from the University Grants Commission would be obtained by the end of December.
Earlier this year the Mahindra Group entered into the higher education sector with the inauguration of an engineering institution - Mahindra cole Centrale (MEC). Mahindra cole Centrale is the maiden venture of Tech Mahindra’s 100 percent subsidiary Mahindra Educational Institutions. The campus is located in Hyderabad.
