This sector is one of the major contributors to the gross domestic product (GDP) growth and can help the government resolve the shortfall in job creation to quite an extent. The interim Budget 2019 helped boost consumer sentiment. The Budget sought to extend tax sops for affordable home developers and remove the tax on notional rent for a second housing unit as well as unsold units. It also sought to extend the benefits under Section 80-IBA of the Income Tax Act for one more year--to housing projects approved till March 2020, which is expected boost supply of affordable housing.
