Electronics is becoming a key enabler in creating an intelligent economy like smart homes, smart transportation and smart cities. The consumer electronic goods makers have sought to lower the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate to 12 percent on appliances like large-screen televisions, air-conditioners and refrigerators, in their Budget wish list to the government. The consumer durables industry is of the view that these items are now household necessities and do not come under the luxury goods category anymore. The white goods sector growth rate had declined in 2016-17 second half after demonetisation but still managed to grow at 12 percent. In 2017-18, the growth rate fell to single digit at 7 percent due to the implementation of GST.
