Shah Rukh Khan’s celebrated song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” may have been shot atop a train, but when clarinettist and composer Shankar Tucker’s made a mash-up of the 1998 song with Michael Jackson’s legendary “Don’t Stop” it was shot entirely on the streets of Mumbai. And guess what? Even Shah Rukh Khan enjoyed it. Many of us have heard Shankar Tucker’s beautiful re-creations of classical carnatic songs, and his other famous mash-up of “Rolling In The Deep” and “O Re Piya”. But this is the first video to be shot on outdoor locations, and going by how over-crowded almost every corner of Mumbai is, it’s no mean feat. [caption id=“attachment_2253536” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Screen grab from the video.[/caption] The video begins with the sunrise, and Vandana Iyer (you may recall her melodious vocals in Tucker’s earlier curated video Munbe Vaa) starts off a fresh, and upbeat version of “Chaiyya Chaiyya”. This is followed by internet singing sensation Sam Tsui singing Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop”. Both singers have done a stellar job at keeping the original melodies intact, and if you don’t watch the video, you could be easily convinced that it’s actually MJ singing. Speaking of the video, there are quick montages of Vandana, Sam Tsui, and Tucker walking through the streets of the city, with autos passing by in the background, the graffiti-rich Chapel Road in Bandra, and an impromptu dance and jam session in front of the Bandra-Worli sea link. The video has now gone viral on social media, with almost 2 lakh views on Youtube. SRK himself tweeted about it, calling it an “amazing mash-up”

Along with being foot-tapping beat, the video works because it’s looks effortless and like four friends just decided to put two songs together and make a quick, fun video about it. It’s endearing to see Tucker dance, as we’ve only seen him behind the clarinet in other studio recordings. Watch the “Chaiyya Chaiyaa/Don’t Stop” mash-up here:
